Open Source Portfolio | Hendrik Erz

In my daily life, I often face a situation in which there is something that I have to do that can benefit from some form of automation. Sometimes, there are great apps that allow me to do that, but not always. It is in such situations that I regularly just sit down on the weekend, and build the corresponding app myself.

On this page, I list a portfolio of the Open Source apps that I've built over the years. This page may not list all apps instantaneously, so for a full list please refer either to my personal repository list on GitHub, or see OpenKit, which lists many apps (mine, but also other apps that I use).

Do you find these tools helpful? Do you even use them yourself? Then I would be happy if you could support my coffee consumption and donate a few bucks over at my Ko-Fi! ;)

Zettlr

My main project is Zettlr, your "one-stop publication workbench." It's one of the most prominent Word alternatives for academics out there and used by thousands of academics around the world. I have developed this app since 2017 and am the project lead ever since.

Pandoc Profile Generator

This is primarily useful for academics and writers who rely on Pandoc directly or indirectly to render documents. This includes writing RMarkdown, Quarto documents, or using apps such as Zettlr to write text. Pandoc Profile Generator allows one to graphically create and modify existing and new defaults files (which Pandoc uses) to customize one's own imports and exports.

OpenKit

OpenKit is a collection of small web tools that I started some time in 2024. Its purpose is to collect those tiny helper tools and utilities that don't deserve their own computer software, but still are useful to have at hand. All tools on the OpenKit registry can be used in a web browser, most even on mobile, and don't require any login.

QRage Pro QR Code Generator

Most QR code generators that are out there are proprietary and want you to either sign up or even pay to create QR codes. This is irritating, since the technology for making QR codes is openly available and free of charge. With QRage Pro, you can generate whatever QR code you like, at no cost and with no data being sold to anybody.

Conference Timer

Over the past years, I have participated in quite many conferences. But no matter how large or small it was — from small workshops to ASA — everywhere people would keep time by holding up small signs with numbers written on them. I wanted to have a solution that would allow me to tell some app how long the presentation is allowed to be, and how much time for Q&A there is afterwards, including reminders such as "5 minutes left" or "Please wrap up!" in such a way that the speakers would be able to quickly glance how well (or bad) they were doing.
